Creative Tuesdays: Angel of Stars

I really pushed myself with this one, trying out new things. After creating the initial drawing, I painted the entire piece in black then digitally erased out portions to create the white areas, trying to assimilate that wood-cut process and feel. Working on the texture was actually the most enjoyable part of the process.

Knowing that angels have been illustrated a dime a dozen, I thought of the beautiful Ethiopians my cousin loves working with and felt that would help add a slightly different touch to the versions we're so used to seeing here, especially as I still really wanted to depict some of those classical angel wings!

Anyway, another fun piece. So, how about you? What kind of STARS did you see? Time to check them out...

  1. I like the background it really looks like the night sky! And a very classical looking angel she is with the golden stars above her head.

  2. This is gorgeous! My trail of thoughts: An angel, holding the stars, an Egyptian angel radiating trust, warmth (despite the black, it is her expression), reliability - there is so much in this piece. I am very glad you pushed yourself the way you did, Michael.

  5. I love the black and white old fashioned hand drawn quality to this! It is stunning (-: The swirls and line work pop out against the dark sky and I love the bright shining stars. Great job!

  7. Thank you, dear Wanda and YEs, I like that reminder! Great! It's funny, as apparently for children's book illustrators we need to learn to focus on one style and let that come through but as a graphic designer, Ive learned to adapt according to the market for waht works best and I like to always push myself to try something new. I've never done a pice like this before..but now I have! :) Thank you. I relaly wanted to capture that heavenly feel and creation so a so thrilled that came through. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave me your thoughtful comment. Very encouraging indeed. :)

BTW, I am sooo curious what you might do for this next go around, if you get a chance to do it. You would certainly have plenty of subject matter all around you! :)
