Scribble Picnic with Books!

Turns out there's a lot of pictures of hedgies and books so had to figure out something not done before since I really wanted to draw this adorable lil' creature again. I actually did a colour version too but still prefer the original pencil drawing above so that's what you see here for my own take.

Thanks to everyone who's joined our picnic again this week after the break. I wonder how many of you did any sketching whilst away? I know I didn't! Just as well I had this picnic to attend! Funnily enough, before even starting today, I kept falling asleep (remains of jet lag). Perhaps it's no wonder then a pillow found its way into this piece? :)

Thank you to everyone who sent well wishes, prayers and/or support my way. I certainly felt buoyed by it, as it were, and if you followed my instagram, you'll have seen the funeral was small but beautiful and so very English. Everything went as well as it could have, all things considered, and I even learnt a few new tidbits about my mother along the way. (More on that later perhaps.)

  1. Dear Michael, so thankful to know you and Alexandra are back after what no doubt was a very sad time for you at home. We ex-pats all go through this so know exactly how it can be.
Love your 'bookish' hedgehog - and his plump cushion looks much more comfortable than a pile of dried leaves. I see, like me, he requires his readers - oh for the days when one could just pick up a book and read. . . . . .without searching the house for the darned glasses!

I'm back too and trying to get posts completed on my recent trip - which was awesome. I have to say anyone wanting Italian history and culture, beautiful Mediterranean scenery, food and more, can't go wrong with a visit to Sicily!

    Hugs - Mary

    1. Sicily, dear Mary, is certainly on my list of places to go to! Now that Mama is gone, there won;t be such a sense of urgency to always spend any money for travel to UK. It woudl be nice to actually go somewhere without seeing family jsut as a tourist! :) And yes, totally relate to the glasses debacle. Thank you.

  2. Welcome home Michael! Your hedgehog is so cute with his book, he gave me a chuckle. I like both the coloured version and the uncoloured!

  3. This hedgehog is adorable...love it! The colour version is great but, I too, love the pencil drawing best. That pillow looks so inviting as it's 11pm here and I am heading off to bed.

I'm glad you and Alexandra made it back home safe and sound. Nice to hear the funeral was beautiful and small. I'm sure it would have been lovely to catch up with family again and reminisce about your Mother, albeit bittersweet in some respects.

I hope you've managed to shake off the jet-lag.

    1. Weirdly enough, STILL trying to get over jet lag and no reason to still have it so maybe it's the thinner air of Colorado or coming off of that emotional shelf, as it were? Thank you.

  4. Michael,
So glad you are back. Missed you and your smile (through your writing). I love your cute sketch and it looks so relaxing. I know about jet lag so take it easy for a bit. Glad all went as well as could be expected during your visit. Many blessings and prayers for you.

  5. Your wonderful hedgehog appears quite into his book, as one should be when reading! Black and white is perfect for this drawing.

Now how did you know I wouldn't start my drawing until yesterday afternoon? Afraid I'm a hopeless "must have a deadline" type! So thank you for giving me one.

Continued prayers for your healing heart.

  6. a pillow for the smart creature, yes why not? I like the contrast between him and the pillow - sharp & soft, that sort of thing. I like the black and white better, I guess I didn't like the pinkish hue in the color version.

hope you get enough rest with all the jet lag. have a lovely day.

    1. Wow, Lissa, you got it! Exactly--contrast between hard edged spikes and soft pillow with rounded petal like edging. Same thing with the colour actually-- soft feminine pink and greens contrasting to the very masculine old man lie hegehog! :) Thanks for noticing. Yes, I thin the B&W reminds me of a sort of Masterpiece Theatre type illo. :)

  7. Your hedgie looks quite comfy on his tuffet. I like the pencil drawing too. I wonder what he's reading? I have a friend who has a pet hedgehog. Poor thing is blind but I wonder if glasses might help it. Glad to have you back.

    1. What is it with hedgies gogin blind? I think that is quite common, actually. Yes, Lorraine, you reminded me, I was going to ask people to please tell me what he might read!

  9. Michael ~ You and Alexandra have such a heart for whimsical sketches and critters. I love your little hedgehog, and I love that he has a couple of books tucked under the pillow. He's prepared. I love that you left it a pencil sketch. So much character in it. Love your comments on my blog. You are the best.
