What's black and white, black and white, black and white?
- A penguin falling down the stairs!
Sorry, heh, just couldn't resist. One of the few jokes I remember from my good ol' days at Glengyle Preparatory School in Putney.
I know. Penguins are perhaps a bit predictable for the theme but I worked on giving these "chinstrap" penguins (as they are called) some individual character and took ages redefining the lines, negative spaces, etc, until finally arriving here. My fave part? His bendy wing* holding onto that cozy scarf lest it blow away. You know, sometimes you've just got to rise above the predictable clatter and strike your independence... tuxedos aren't for everyone!
Your turn now to share cheesy jokes and something black and white for us all to sample — um, visually, that is... unless they're Oreos, of course! I'm guessing no one would dare munch on penguin blubber, would they? Surely not. Is that even legal these days?
*Come to think of it, is it "wing" or "flipper" for a penguin? I'm not actually sure. Haha.

ReplyDeleteLol Michael, I think people will eat anything these days because it's so trendy to say "I ate a grub in the forest this morning!!!" Ewww. I'm more traditional than that! I'll eat that Oreo, but otherwise...no penguin on the menu for me! :)

The little wing is very cute holding the scarf! Do you remember this this little fella from Bugs Bunny? Crying ice cubes! My favourite Penguin!
Yes, I've heard that joke before too, about the same time as this one, but that above one cracks me up everytime, even now! haha.

ReplyDeleteThey each are quite handsome and drawing them in all the different positions really lets you get to know them. Well done and the scarf turns it into cute.
Black and White, this and that, this or that, any ink drawing on white paper. Those are the things that went through my mind.
I have to say I do like how well positioned they are--it looks natural even though it was all contrived! :) Thank you.

DeleteI had no idea if I was right though as that was just my own thought process. Your own thought process made total sense. So, just looked it up and...either will do...but 'flipper' is more frequently used in scientific circles due to the fact that it is more a true flipper, than a wing. So, no right or wrong...both are correct. :)

DeleteWell of course I considered penguins, again, I love them so much, but decided on the zebra this time.
ReplyDeleteI love your illustration Michael. I saw 3,300 breeding pairs of chinstraps when we landed by Zodiac on Half Moon Island on the way to Antarctica. They were the cutest penguins, but so messy!

No worries. I added you jsut now. I had accidentally pre-scheduled the post and art to go up at 5pm instead of 5 am so did not realise it was not up until taking a lunch break yesterday! I love that you look forward to it. I do too, especially seeing the variety of interpretations.
