Ladybirds and bugs are welcome at Scribble Picnic!

Another bug collector of sorts — this one far more lovely... and utilitarian. While obviously not owning any ladybug/ladybird buttons or embroidered edging, not even any socks with such fun, I'm sure some of you do, right? Well, regardless, the picnic blankets and tables here are laid. Time to show us your own cheery bug collection...

P.S. BTW, the "fill-in-the-blank" challenge was a huge success and actually garnered the most curiosity and views (close to 500) I've had here! So, how about we do that again? The variety of interpretations from a simple dot and line were fascinating, don't you think? I wonder what you'd do with a blob-like shape perhaps? Hmmm.

  1. I love what you have done here, a very realistic take here, different than your usual style, you must be evolving Michael. Cute ladybugs too.

Another 'fill in the blank' type challenge will be so fun to look forward to!

    1. Haha, I'm not evolving -- I can do realistic if I want to but usually find that style very boring and the biggest issue--takes waaay longer - a luxury I never have here. :)

OK on the blank challenge! yeahhh

  2. I like the ladybug buttons & all the decorative colors. it's actually a nice outfit and the colors compliment each other.

& yes, I do like that 'fill in the blank' idea. I wouldn't mind doing another those, I once draw a turtle out of photo of a crack in the sidewalk, it really is interesting what people sees in shapes and lines, our imagination is unlimited after all

    have a lovely day.

    1. OOh, a cracked line is a great idea, Lissa. May well do that. Thank you.

  5. I do recall pretty buttons such as these - and embroidered sweaters too. I see the two teeny weeny ladybirds on the collar of the blouse too.
Oh Michael, this is such a beautiful illustration - those lips are amazing (did Alexandra model for you?). I love everything here.

Fill in the blank - a blob?????? OMG that will be a hard one, BUT I'm already putting my thinking cap on in case you throw this one at us in the future!

Greetings from NC where it will be as high as 110F for the next few days. . . . . needless to say, any picnicking in these parts will be done indoors!

    1. I must say, dear Mary, as pretty as NC no doubt is, am very glad to be here where it is dryer currently. :)

Funny on the lips. no, Alex's are thinner. I jsut drew what came to my imagination as was the whole thing. Thank you. now, I would love to get this sweater, f it existed for Alex..as well as the cute embroidered shirt!

  6. I thought I had left a comment but I don't see it. I was having problems with my computer this morning. So I will try again.

I absolutely adore her. She's lovely. Her skin, and lips are so gentle and soft.

I do remember wearing sweaters like this one when I was in High School with pretty buttons and embroidered edging. Do you remember scatter pins, that you pined on your sweaters. I had two lady bug scatter pins...my that was so many years ago.

This may be my favorite..as you have gone beyond whimsical, and she could walk right off the page. Hugs.

    1. Thank you, Wanda. I don;t normally bother with more realistic rendering like this as they simply take way too long for an art piece once a week on top of my full time job and whatnot.

Anyway, this whole piece from clothes to how she looked was fun to imagine. I know--I should have been a fashion designer perhaps but probably too much a classicist in terms of good tried and tested design.

  9. Absolutely beautiful take for the Ladybird theme, Michael! Gorgeous colours! I especially love the Ladybird buttons and the embroidery work. Well done, indeed! I'm curious...is this a cropped version of a whole piece?

I would love another 'Fill in the blank' challenge...it was fun! You could even make it a regular once-a-month thing. :)

    1. Ha, I am actually thinking, judging from the good feedback to indeed make this a once a month theme--the fill in the blank challenge! :)

No, sorry, I only imagined the piece as seen here. I did crop off a little bit of the bottom but didn't imagine her face beynd the lips and left that to intrigue deliberately so the focus stayed on the embroidery and buttons. :) thank you.

  10. Well, that's just lovely ... certainly something I would wear, ladybugs and all. When I was young, I had aubern hair like this yound lady and green was always my favorite color ... right on, Micheal :)

  11. This is so lovely Michael. I love looking at her and the details in her clothing, including her cute buttons. Wonderful shading and light too.

I think a word or a shape is similar, wide open to interpretation and creativity.

    1. Yes, I think the shape is a great idea. A word might be too similar to the challenges we already do. :) Thank you.

  13. Even from just the little we see, we can tell this young lady is just beautiful! Great idea for the ladybug placement!
Wow, I'm number 16. You may need to spread an extra blanket or haul in another table for the next picnic!

    1. Haha, another blanket is for sure in order. I think it is partly because Alex has decided to shut down Sunday Sketches and so as she is here, people are joining. love it.

Wouldn't it be funny is this woman had a mono brow adn bug eyes or something? I imagined the lips and jawline to be very feminine but left the rest to intrigue and imagination as such so to focus on the buttons and embroidery. I like ti when pieces make you imagine what is not shown.

      Thank you, Jolene
