Scribble Picnic's Black and White Samplings!

What's black and white, black and white, black and white?
- A penguin falling down the stairs!

Sorry, heh, just couldn't resist. One of the few jokes I remember from my good ol' days at Glengyle Preparatory School in Putney.

I know. Penguins are perhaps a bit predictable for the theme but I worked on giving these "chinstrap" penguins (as they are called) some individual character and took ages redefining the lines, negative spaces, etc, until finally arriving here. My fave part? His bendy wing* holding onto that cozy scarf lest it blow away. You know, sometimes you've just got to rise above the predictable clatter and strike your independence... tuxedos aren't for everyone!

Your turn now to share cheesy jokes and something black and white for us all to sample — um, visually, that is... unless they're Oreos, of course! I'm guessing no one would dare munch on penguin blubber, would they? Surely not. Is that even legal these days?

*Come to think of it, is it "wing" or "flipper" for a penguin? I'm not actually sure. Haha.

  1. I'll try that again lol...I put the wrong link for you so I just fixed it!

Lol Michael, I think people will eat anything these days because it's so trendy to say "I ate a grub in the forest this morning!!!" Ewww. I'm more traditional than that! I'll eat that Oreo, but otherwise...no penguin on the menu for me! :)

I love your joke, I only have the newspaper one so I'll not bore anyone with that! :)

The little wing is very cute holding the scarf! Do you remember this this little fella from Bugs Bunny? Crying ice cubes! My favourite Penguin!

    1. Yes, I've heard that joke before too, about the same time as this one, but that above one cracks me up everytime, even now! haha.

Wow, you are right-- I am sure penguin is trendy somewhere. Ew!

Oh and I sooo remember that little fellow. Wow. Forgotten all about him. So cute.

Thank you for your lovely thoughtful comment. I love having you be a part of this co-op. You add so much to it. Hope you get a chance to come back here and read this!

  2. Well, I did not think of penguins and never heard your cut joke.

They each are quite handsome and drawing them in all the different positions really lets you get to know them. Well done and the scarf turns it into cute.

Black and White, this and that, this or that, any ink drawing on white paper. Those are the things that went through my mind.

    1. I have to say I do like how well positioned they are--it looks natural even though it was all contrived! :) Thank you.

Yes, I'm glad you chose ink -was hoping someone would do that!

  4. Oh Michael, what a darling illustration. So crisp and clean and so black and white...just that splash of color on the scarf and that little wing hold it tight no wanting to lose it.

I just watched Happy Feet a few weeks ago and Penquins did enter my mind.

This would make a really cute card.

    1. Never seen any of those...yet! I really prefer not to see kid's cartoons but am sure I will sit through more as time goes by. Thank you for your lovely comments too elsewhere, Wanda.

  5. I thought my choice was predictable but penguins didn't even enter my mind. haha Your penguins are so sweet, Michael! I love the addition of the scarf...it 'wraps it up' perfectly.

I think technically, its 'flipper', but 'wing' works too.

    1. Oh OK! thank you. I had first written "flipper" but then thought if it's a bid, surely wing! So glad you took the time to answer that. Thank you again. :)

    2. I had no idea if I was right though as that was just my own thought process. Your own thought process made total sense. So, just looked it up and...either will do...but 'flipper' is more frequently used in scientific circles due to the fact that it is more a true flipper, than a wing. So, no right or wrong...both are correct. :)

    3. So, my indecision on what word to use was about right. :) Thank you for the update.

  6. I went with penguins too, but I prefer how sharp and clear yours are!
I believe the one with his mouth open is complimenting the one with the scarf.
And thanks for the joke–I'll use it when I see our grandson!

  7. Well of course I considered penguins, again, I love them so much, but decided on the zebra this time.
I love your illustration Michael. I saw 3,300 breeding pairs of chinstraps when we landed by Zodiac on Half Moon Island on the way to Antarctica. They were the cutest penguins, but so messy!
Here's the link to my post - your chinstraps are definitely excellent - but I didn't see any wearing colorful scarves, haha!

  9. Love it! I might caption it "Let Your Freak Flag Fly". Be the one who stands out. And that icy blue sky is just wonderful.

  12. Oh no ... I posted yesterday morning but your linky wasn't up yet. Then when I got home from the rehab center, I was so tired I forgot to link up. Now I can't so my efforts will be lost to your audience. Not that they were so great ... I just so look forward to Scribble Picnic every week. Sorry ... Love your Pelicans and the tiny bit of color in the scarf sets everything off.

    1. No worries. I added you jsut now. I had accidentally pre-scheduled the post and art to go up at 5pm instead of 5 am so did not realise it was not up until taking a lunch break yesterday! I love that you look forward to it. I do too, especially seeing the variety of interpretations.

I know you took a lot of time to do that again but please know it is truly appreciated. I love your comments - they make me smile and realize there are still good people in the world and that you are definitely one of them!
Just to let you know, there's a good chance we'll be coming your way next year - we're going to plan a trip which includes Colorado, Utah etc., so you know we'll definitely try to come see you and Alexandra and meet up for a cuppa and Victoria sponge. . . . . . or toast and jam!

Again, many thanks for always being such a lovely, thoughtful friend - as only an Englishman can be, haha!
