Flower Beds at midnight

Mistress of the Night Garden (work in progress)

This is currently still a work in progress to give you an idea where I'm going with it. All along, I've had this idea of showing a gothic type garden of sorts where the flowers chosen are ones that are actually dark in colour, often illuminating deep blues and purples in the moonlight, and so on.

I've often thought finding such a garden would be so unique! And you know me — always have to to push that creative envelope. So, when this piece is completed, there will be Black Irises, Black Pearl Calla Lillies, Nigra dark maroon Hollyhocks and this pensive lady will be holding her favourites: Gladioli Black Stars. It's just begging for a PBS/BBC Mystery Masterpiece Theatre, isn't it? Of course, they'd have to pay me for art direction! :)

OK, time to step out from this eclipse and into our growing Scribble Picnic wonderland. Speaking of which, I wonder what you've cultivated in your flower beds?

P.S. For your "Fill in the Blank" challenge next week, the shape to use is shown above in the windows. Can you see it? Please be sure to employ at least one square with an "X" in it! The possibilities are endless — anything from wallpaper to treasure maps!

  2. Cannot wait to see this gothic garden come to life with dark colour. Very original creative idea, wonderful details everywhere complete with a goth girl!

    1. The gal is actually based on a real life instagrammer cosplayer who often cosplays as someone in the shadows, as it were. Not goth herself but I used one of her outfits as the initial inspiration for this piece (https://www.instagram.com/p/BS6PiiiBuGq/?taken-by=mistressoffear), although an entirely different pose.

  4. Oh you do have a dark side ... and only you could find the beauty in it. This is intriguing and will be more than beautiful as a finished product.

    1. Ha, thanks. More so, I really firmly believe that to grow creatively one has to push oneself into unfamiliar ground and explore new ways of depicting things to further engage the right brain, developing that creative thought process. Otherwise it's too easy to get in a rutt and fall back on the familiar, become expert at that but not grow as a designer or illustrator. :)
Yes, I'm really looking forward to exploring the combination of dark hues like dark reds, dark purples, midnight blues, etc. Should be interesting!
      Thank you Andrea.

  5. This is very striking and very beautiful. Great concept. I have a friend who has a moonlight garden. She has planted all white flowers which are illuminated by the moon at night. I'd never thought of going the other way with dark flowers. But I'm imagining it equally beautiful.

  6. wonderfully dramatic piece Michael.
I look forward to seeing it completed with all your ideas manifested. I love how light her skin is compared to the rest, though now i know that could change.

  7. Very unusual. Would love to see the finished work. I like colour and not dark so it makes me feel eerie.
On holidays with SLOW Internet. Hope to find time to respond today or tomorrow to my Scribblers.

    1. Thank you. Me too. Love colour and also love to push myself creatively to do things I am not as familiar with as it engages a different part of the brain.

  9. this makes think of some dark tale or mystery, or like a dream sequence. I like the one-tone colors and her expression says a lot. you say it's unfinished but I sort of like it like this.

fill in the blank with X's? couldn't think of a single thing at the moment but it sounds interesting.

    have a lovely day.

    1. Haha, maybe you can add a quilt pattern behind the lady you recently drew? :) Yes, I like the monochromatic piece here too and yet am also looking forward to exploring the darker colours associated with a goth Victorian look. Should be fun. Thank you.

  11. What a grand variety of flowers in this garden! I like that it looks like moonlight shining on the girl, but feel sad that she seems so joyless amidst all that glory.

    1. Exactly. She is a restless soul, searching in the shadows for her solace.
