Little Critters (Creative Tuesdays)

You're going to want to view this enlarged to see all the little details. :)

It wasn't until Sunday morning, actually, that I came up with this idea while slowly waking up. It just popped into my head and got me thinking, "oooh.."! Not to lose the inspiration, I started sketching this up that very day, finishing up tonight (Monday evening) as the sun slowly sets on this surprisingly rainy, cloudy second half of the day. Anytime it's times like this, I'm bound to get the cozy creative muse.

So, what are your little critters up to? Time to find out!

P.S. BTW, I sketched this up on my tiny sketchpad used for the cricket sketch shown on CT. Makes for some nice gritty pencil textures.

P.P.S. Oh dear, I just realized, I did not draw in or colour the bottom of the column, behind Mr. Hedgehog! Silly me. Oh well. I was too busy making sure he stood out enough from the background. Haha.

  1. those are pretty houses, I wouldn't might living in them. I like the red one the most, it totally matched the beetle's look. cute critters.

  2. HAha, yes indeed, Lissa. I'm thinking the same thing. I was thinking the worm could live in a really narrow house too (but of course, he'd have to be on his rear haunches the whole time! Oh dear me. )

No way I would do a sod house, mind you, but hedgehogs do love to eat little grubbies with their teatimes, you know. :)

  3. Oh Michael, I packed my tiny suitcase and I want to move in too. I'll take the one on the end. Love the grass on the roof...
Your imagination is the early morning hours is beyond cute. Not only do you have little critters, but you've been so thoughtful to give them a home. Love it....

    1. Ha, I love that, Wanda. thank you. Like I said to Lissa, not sure I could handle the creepy crawlies that Mr Hedgehog likes to add to his toast and jam for his morning protein--helps grow the prickles I hear. :) So, that's what he's sweeping? Hmmm

    1. A sod house? Really. Well it could be cozy if you are a hedgehog, no doubt! thank you for your spirit of adventure and imagination here in your comment. Glad you are playing along wit the rest of us, Tinna, for this theme too.

  9. Hi Michael, I wish I knew how to draw and finish a piece as quickly as you do. Remarkable houses and little critters. My favorite is the worm, but the ladybug and hedgehog are fabulous too. Each piece appears to have been colored with pencil crayons which kids would love to do. I'm not really here (taking a break until September). LOL :-)

    1. Hahaha, I keep finding you, Tracy, "not" being here all over the CT landscape! Thank you so much for playing along and visiting others anyway! :) Well, truth be told, all together there was a good 10 hours or so on those sketches. The colouring was done digitally in fact. :)

    2. P.S. So glad you like the worm one the best as now that makes someone liking each of the houses the best so not criitter feels left out! :)

Also, we will be sorry to see you gone from Ct for a while, but yes, breaks from blogging are good too. Come back soon! :)

  10. Michael, I just LOVE these little houses, so imaginative and glorious in all their detail. My favourite would be Mr Snake's house as it reminds me of a beach hut, and as I live by the coast it would be just right for me. Wouldn't it be lovely to think that all the little critters in the world lived in houses like these. Am loving this new way of putting each drawing into a little box, very effective. A tryptic of houses!

    1. That's funny as I never even read that. Assumed you meant snake. ha. Yes, I decided to do them as three separate boxes due to the size differences between a hedgehog and a ladybird, for example. thank you for your comments, Linda!

  11. LOVE! Can't choose a favourite but the ladybug with the broom is so dear. Is that a bumblebee knocker on her door? :-) And I am sure it's a bookworm... not just a run-of-the-mill worm. Isn't he jaunty with his satchel! And that fun hedgehog - who wouldn't want him as a neighbour? I want to buy a home in your critter town.

    1. OOh, I like that--a bookworm. Clever. Must admit I didn't think that but why not. I'm thinking Mr. worm likes his house with all those lines like the ones on his own body. Its skinny too, like him. :) Ha, glad you caught the satchel. Jaunty jiggly wormy. Love it. :) thank you.

    2. Yes, I noticed his lovely, tall house with the slim windows and doors - even his mailbox looks made-to-measure! All their houses suit each of them - perfect.

  12. Adorable, I love how it's little critters and their houses! Which is almost hidden if you don't look carefully :-D I love the Ladybug and the Worm, but the Hedgie is probably my favorite ^_^ I do love Hedgehogs, and they are somewhat similar to the little Echidnas I am such a fan of. It would be great to see these characters all having tea, together! I wonder which one would host? (-:

  13. Ha, I love that idea. The only thing is that the hedgie woudl be sooo much bigger than the ladybug and worm that it would be hard to see them in comparison. Thus why I put them each in their own picture so I didn't have to worry about the scale between them.

  14. These are so cute and with such great details :) I like the way you drew the houses to resemble the little critters.
