Mushy Valentine's Day Scribble Picnics!

"Mushy Peas" — Oh Peas, just kiss me!

Happy Valentine's Day! I know, I know, some note how it's a horribly commercial holiday and all that, but as it is, aren't all the holidays these days, especially Christmas and Halloween? Well, be that as it may, I'm choosing to focus on romance, love and kindheartedness this day (and every day)! How can you go wrong with that? :) Speaking of which, hmm, it might be time to watch again my favourite romantic movie... "Braveheart!" Oh yes, it IS incredibly so! I mean, for one, the protagonist is a brave man fighting for his wife's honour and even Sophie Marceau comes in later as the beautiful lovelorn princess. Oh, and it quite possibly has the most stirring musical score ever. Sigh. OK, time to snap out of it and pull myself back together!

As most of you probably already know, I'm not terribly into doing representational art — it rather leaves my imagination disengaged. This lil' peas of art is rare indeed then! Trouble is, I didn't have any actual peas to look at, so in the end did get to imagine something after all. Aren't they just too sweet? Kind of like my parents' mantra: sometimes in life, you've just got to go for it — you never know how much longer you've got!

Right, now it's your turn to bring something maybe not so mushy, per se, but certainly depicting such. Can't wait to see what everyone's brought. Split pea soup anyone? :)

  1. You and I were kinda on the same wave-length with this one, Michael. We both went for mushy peas...I wonder if anyone else did. What fun! hehe

I LOVE your take...so sweet! And I also like the shine you captured on the fork...great job all round!

Braveheart is a favourite of mine too...awesome movie!

Happy Valentine's Day to you and Alexandra!

    1. Well, who would guess? I never think of women terribly liking Braveheart as most think of it as a war sort of movie but yes, it is romantic too! :) Thank you.

    2. I enjoy a wide range of genres when it comes to movies. Last of the Mohicans, Black Hawk Down, Enemy at the Gates, American Sniper, Platoon, Rules of Engagement, Tears of the Sun, Lone Survivor...just to name a few war-type movies in my extensive DVD collection. I think my favourite genre would be Supernatural Thriller types or dramas that are based on true stories. That said, I love family/kids movies too. Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Shrek, Brother Bear, The Incredibles, and more. :)

  3. . . . . . . well certainly looks like peas are on our minds. They're only thing 'mushy' which really stir my thoughts as, let's face it Michael, everyone British was brought up on fish 'n chips and mushy peas, haha!!!! My mum's were always good made from scratch - the purchased ones, even the chip shop versions, questionable!!!

I love your rendering today - placemat/tablecloth is so lovely, almost like a stencil, and that's a great fork. As for kissing peas - adorable. Hugs to you and Alexandra for Valentine's Day.

Mary - who's enjoying flowers and chocolate hearts as I write. He's so good to me!

    1. Must say, not surprised to learn that your dearest is a romantic at heart too!

Yes, mushy peas was a fairly obvious take for some of us but you know, I didn’t realize people actually made them at home. Every time I’ve had them, they’ve been out of a can and, you know, you’re right—they are indeed somewhat questionable! Ha, I think I liked them way more as a teen and young adult than now. Still, if someone offered me some, I wouldn’t pass them up either.

Yes, still life drawing can take a loooong time but it is good practice too. I still prefer from the imagination the best though. Thank you.

  4. Apparently I am past the age of connecting the word "mushy" to Valentines because I just did mushy :) And yes it is all commercialized ... in fact our country seems to function on buying a selling more than giving and loving these days ... but that doesn't mean we can't still be kind and loving in our personal lives. I will celebrate Valentines with my husband with a nice meal, a big smooch and a card, Ha! And, cake for dessert which is his favorite, but we don't indulge in often :) I know you and Alexandra will revel in your love for each other ... Do have a happy Valentines Day, Micheal ... as for the sweet peas ... I love them. Certainly a unique approach to a mushy kiss :)

    1. Yes, you got it— a mushy kiss— exactly! Thank you, Andrea. I love that you made your hubs a cake. Lucky chap there. So what kind was it? When it comes to cakes, I think I’d be happy with anything. :)

    2. Chocolate with Chocolate buttercream frosting ... as gooey as I can get it because that is the way he likes it (and truth be known, I like it that way too :). See you next week, Micheal :)

    1. Pencil and then digital, layering it up in “washes” like a watercolours to get that certain look. It probably took longer than if I had just keep it all on paper but less mess to clean up afterwards! thanks. I still prefer imaginative pieces more so, however. good practice though, must admit and yes the table cloth took ages, even with me simplifying those few shapes to hearts to save time! Ha. Thank you so much, Christine.

  6. Absolutely amazing the tenderness of the piece, the precious peas, and oh my...that fork...I tried to pick it up...talk about capturing REAL. This is so good. And yes, Braveheart is on the top of my favorite list...seen it so many times, I can't remember. And love the hanky...such a love story.

  7. So cute Michael! "Oh Peas..." that made me giggle. Your peas are sweet and glorious! :) Despite my mushy personality, I'm not at all into romantic movies! Funny huh? Maybe I'll watch the horror "My Bloody Valentine" tonight lol! ;) Can't wait to find out about next week's prompt!! I hope you and your lovey-dovey have a nice romantic evening tonight! You are right, you CANNOT go wrong with love and romance. :))

    1. Actually, from reading your posts for long enough now, I’m not too surprised to find out you are not into romcoms—certainly not expected or required simply b/c one’s a woman or like back to nature stuff! Ha, yes, I’ve seen that movie btw. Quite funny really. I am sure you and your Alex live a mushy life there in the woods up in Canada pretty every day as it is. Thank you so much.

  8. Oh, little sweet peas.
Your idea is very creative Michael. And beautifully portrayed. I like the hearts in the plate and the sweetness between the peas.
Happy Love day to you and Alexandra.

    1. You know, I actually did imagine the hearts on the tablecloth as the real shapes in those larger shapes were super complicated and I wanted to save time, as well as tie it more into the theme too. Ha, thank you!

  9. I'm reminded of that song with the line "oh sweet pea, come on and dance with me". Your memory of peas is spot on. I admit that I think I've only seen Braveheart once and don't remember it as romantic, but I just might have to have another look and listen.

    1. Yes, that’s the point really—not exactly marketed as a romantic movie but certainly has stirring elements of such within in. Oh, for the love of a woman! :) Yes, I don’t really think of women terribly likening it, Alexandra and Wanda perhaps being some of the few exceptions! Ha, I like that song you recall. PErfect for this piece. Thank you.

  10. I LOVE everything about this!!! The beautifully painted art, the play on words, and the overall whimsy of it... So fun! I think the realism of the plate & fork combined with the playful subject makes it even stronger. It is a great interpretation of the theme and I'm really enjoying participating in these picnics. Thank you for hosting! (I'm chomping at the bit for more "fill in the Blank" details!)

    1. Kristin, that’s such a thoughtful comment—that was exactly what I was going for—the contrast between what, on the surface of things is seemingly so normal, even realistic, but then there’s this romcom on a plate —two mushed together peas being all mushy on each other with sweet pea love. Ha, just writing it cracks me up. thank you so much.

So glad you are enjoying this dip back into an art collective and let me tell you, we LOVE having you back too, in this new picnic format. Whenever I read such comments from people here, my heart is filled to the brim. Thank you.

BTw, the new prompt details are up. Enjoy. It’s pretty easy this time, I think. Will be interesting to see what everyone does.
