Creative Tuesdays: FISH Ahoy!

Fish Ahoy!

While drawing this up, I thought about Nantucket/Cade Cod style marine folk art and how great that could be to use for this theme. Also, using a limited colour palette, helped me give a subtle yet patriotic nod to July 4th which is when I did a lot of the work, finishing off the fish and details today.

As often is the case, I took some liberty with objects, like this boat, just using various images as a base board for inspiration, and of course, none of these fish are based on anything real either, but you get the idea. In my book, artistic license is what makes doing the work more creative in the first place anyway!

Pushing myself further, I wanted to create something that didn't use any lines for outlines (like I usually do) but relying on the objects' colours themselves for definition. Whilst Alex and a friend sewed up cloth bunting tonight, I decided to add a navel version of it here too. :)

Yes, this was all quite fun and, actually, I might have even hummed a few lines of Gilligan's Island whilst at it. How about you?

  1. Wow this piece is spectacular, so professional, it could be a logo. You were really inspired for this theme Michael! Maybe you were thinking of your upcoming trip 'across the pond'

  2. This is so sweet. How can one family be filled with so much talent? I can just see the two of you happily putting your pictures onto paper with grins on your faces. I, too, wish I would not use pencil lines. You did a dine job.

    1. Genie, thank you for your comment. I have to chuckle as sometimes while we are working on things together we both have little creases on our brows from trying to set something just so. :-) Thank you though, very nice of you to say.

  3. sounds like you had fun creating this piece, I also sort of loosely draw what fishes look like and not draw anything real, I agreed with you that artistic license is a good way to create, isn't that joy of creation? to do make what you want and imagine instead of trying to mimic reality?

great piece, you seem to have put lots of thoughts to this.

    have a lovely day.

    1. Thank you. If only it was perfect. I knew I should not have Aust a sailor friend of mine to look at it. He told me that it is very bad formto literally let's all hang out and hang ones buoys off the side of the boat. Ha ha. Anyway, it's is funny how this piece seems to be several people's favorite and yet it has no lines as I usually do. Oh dear me. That means more work on my end. :-)

    1. Wanda, thank you for taking time out of your holiday to leave the sweet comment. It is funny how many people have told me that this reminds them of some kind of logo. Alex actually said that as well. I was thinking it could look pretty nifty on the canvas shopping bag somewhere in Maine, no? :-)
